RCPI opens its doors to reflect on a century of pioneering women
In November 1924, Dr Mary Hearn, a gynaecologist working at the Victoria Hospital for Women & Children in Cork, broke new ground. A physician returned to medicine after taking a short break to get married, and after working industriously in various jobs in Cork, she was sworn in as the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland’s (RCPI) first female Fellow.
Dr Hearn’s achievement paved the way for others; 100 years after her admission, over 600 women have become Fellows of RCPI.
On this major centenary, the college welcomes the public to attend a special event on Wednesday 11 September celebrating pioneering women. Our doors will re-open after a summer of refurbishment, allowing all to explore the transformed interiors, and discover events from 100 years ago when several extraordinary women questioned the college’s by-laws around Fellowship.
Drop in during the afternoon for an open house, where a market led by female artisans will display jewellery, pottery and candles, and a clothes swap will allow exchange of goods while reducing textile waste.
In the evening, a panel of inspiring female leaders will reflect on how opportunities for women have changed over time, followed by a drinks reception and the opportunity to network with friends and colleagues.
We look forward to welcoming you to No. 6 Kildare Street.
