Outcome Based Education Curricula for RCPI Postgraduate Specialist Training Programmes
The full rollout of Outcome Based Education (OBE) training curricula for all RCPI postgraduate specialist training programmes, including the Basic Specialist Training (BST) and the Higher Specialist Training (BST) programmes, was introduced in July 2024.
In response to changes in medicine, healthcare delivery, technology and emerging education theories, the RCPI Education team has recently completed a multi-year intensive review of available evidence and Trainee feedback resulting in the full revision of the specialty curricula for RCPI training programmes.
Throughout this transformative project, the goal has been to develop usable and relatable curricula for Trainees and Trainers - curricula that are aligned clearly with actual workplace practice. The training needs of the Trainee are prioritised in the design of each curriculum, focusing on what they need to do in order to gain mastery of the tasks expected from them.
By adhering to an OBE curriculum design, it is acknowledged that, while the training programme provides a standardised organisation of training overall, the individual experience of each Trainee may be different. Some skills are learned quickly, others require more practice to achieve competency. The OBE curriculum takes this into consideration by allowing Trainees the flexibility to develop/advance at their own pace.
The 2024/2025 training curricula are now available on the RCPI website. To view a curriculum, navigate to the relevant specialty training programme and select the curriculum for 2024/2025.
Special thanks to our National Specialty Directors, Trainers, and Trainees who actively participated in the OBE workshops, as well as members of the Specialty Training Committees and Clinical Leads. Their engagement, commitment, time, and input throughout this extensive review and revision are greatly appreciated.
