New wave of doctors conferred at Institute of Medicine ceremony

Eighty-one doctors in the Higher Specialist Training (HST) Programmes in Medicine were awarded CSCST at a special ceremony at No 6 Kildare Street, home of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, on 21 June. 

The Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST) is awarded at the end of 4-6 years on a programme, and marks the end of a journey that for many doctors began when they commenced studying medicine at least 12 years ago. 

Reflecting on the meaning of the Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training, RCPI President Dr Diarmuid O'Shea said: "The word 'Satisfactory' has always struck me as interesting. It is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as “fulfilling expectations or needs; acceptable, though not outstanding".

"As doctors, we strive for standards of excellence, not just to be acceptable. We spend our careers caring for people, their wellbeing and, in many cases, their lives.  Each of you, I have no doubt, will continue to strive for excellence as you embark on your first consultant role, and take on leadership roles throughout your career as you achieve new milestones and push the boundaries of your knowledge and, indeed, your specialty."

The college was also privileged to award Certificates of Achievement to four doctors on the International Clinical Fellowship Programme, who are now lifelong members of our global community contributing to medical practice in Ireland and in their home countries.
