National Education Day for Doctor’s in Training Celebrated at No. 6 Kildare Street

On 26 May 2023, the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland’s Trainees’ Committee celebrated National Education Day for Doctor’s in Training with a special event, held at No. 6 Kildare Street.

The theme for the event was “Things We Don’t Learn in Medical Training”, examining the key learnings that cannot necessarily be taught through training but rather learned through real-life experiences on the front line.

An expert panel of speakers on the day shared their expertise and the key career moments that offered them surprising learnings outside of the training environment.

The event also allowed Trainees to meet and share thoughts and ideas, as well as discuss universal issues that all Trainees face daily.

Speaking about the event, Chair of the RCPI Trainees’ Committee Dr Lucy Geraghty said “These types of events are essential for Trainees; they get a chance to get together as a group and share their experiences. The day itself was focused on universal issues, such as looking after ourselves to help us look after our patients and specific issues like the changing science of obesity, which is relevant for Trainees no matter what specialty they're training in.”

“Events that promote self-reflection and communication among Trainees, especially outside of their usual clinical sites, contribute to wellbeing and help Trainees remember that we're all in it together,” Dr Geraghty explained. “The support and emphasis that the Trainees Committee and the College place on this annual event also helps show Trainees that they are valued and welcomed at No. 6 Kildare Street.”

A key benefit to the event was the practical advice that Trainees could take away with them and implement in their daily working life.

Dr Geraghty explains “Our guest speakers were all brilliant- each offered a unique perspective on the theme of 'things we don't learn in medical training', like deliberately taking on only what we can cope with and deliver on, and an appreciation of what it's like to access postgraduate training in Ireland when you haven't gone to university here.”

She added, “Our panelists of recently qualified consultants offered really useful, practical advice on how to think about and get prepared for work life after training and all we have to look forward to.”

Dr Geraghty also praised the incredibly high standard of Trainee presentations, both oral and poster, and commended the passion shown by participants.

She said, “What stood out most to me, and I imagine to others who attended, is that it's very clear from our Trainees that the future of medicine is bright!”
