International Pathology Day 2023

The tenth annual International Pathology Day was held at No. 6 Kildare Street on 8 November 2023, featuring an impressive lineup of experts who shared their knowledge and insights on the crucial role of pathology in bowel cancer screening and diagnosis. 

The day kicked off with a special presentation by Dr Edward TM Smyth, a former Consultant Bacteriologist and Infection Prevention & Control Doctor at the Royal Hospitals Trust in Belfast, who presented the College with a unique and beautiful piece of art. It was an exciting moment for everyone in attendance, as they got to hear about its creation from Dr Smyth himself. 

The event is dedicated to raising awareness about the critical role of pathology in healthcare and its profound impact on individuals worldwide. This year, the focus was on the role of pathology in screening and diagnosis of bowel cancer. The programme included a range of informative talks: 

  • Introduction and Clinical Aspects of the Irish National Bowel Screening Programme - Dr Marie Staunton, Consultant Histopathologist, Beaumont Hospital 

  • Faecal Immunochemical Testing FIT – in Bowel Cancer Screening - Dr Kevin McCarthy, Specialist Registrar, Chemical Pathology Tallaght University Hospital 

  • The Patient's Prospective - Mr Michael Nowlan 

  • Histopathology Aspects of BowelScreen - Dr Niall Mulligan, Consultant Histopathologist, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital 

  • Microbiology – a Hidden Message in the Blood Culture Bottle - Dr Maeve Doyle, Consultant Clinical Microbiologist and Dean of Education, RCPI 

  • Streptococcus Gallolyticus: from Altruistic Blood Donation to Preclinical Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer - Dr Joan Power, Consultant Haematologist, Irish Blood Transfusion Service, Cork and Vice President, RCPI 

  • Dr Kathleen Lynn and Early Childhood Pathology in Ireland - Ms Harriet Wheelock, Keeper of Collections, RCPI
