Institute of Medicine Holds its Winter Symposium at No. 6 Kildare Street

The Institute of Medicine Winter Symposium, held on 25 January 2024 at No. 6 Kildare Street, brought together medical professionals and educators under the theme of "Training Future Clinician Educators and Getting the Most out of In-work and End-of-year Assessments."

Chaired by Prof Margaret O’Connor, Consultant in Geriatric & Internal Medicine in the UL Hospital Group, the first session delved into the recently launched Irish Clinician Educator Training (ICET) Programme. Prof Edward McKone, Director of Education and Training at the Institute of Medicine Board, provided important updates on the programme. Following this, Dr Clare Kennedy, fourth year Specialist Registrar in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Dr Karen Dennehy, Geriatric Specialist Registrar/RCPI's Irish Clinical Educator Track 2023-2025 shared their experiences and provided valuable insights on the programme.

The session concluded with an engaging panel discussion, which provided attendees with an opportunity to ask questions, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas. The session was particularly beneficial to Trainees who are considering a career with a subspecialty interest in medical education.

In the second session, we were joined by Prof Rikki Fuller, Consultant Stroke Physician and Geriatrician and Director of Christie Education in Manchester, UK and Dr Natasha Slattery, Associate Programme Director, Mid-West Intern Network, University of Limerick.

Prof Fuller's talk, "What does good and bad look like in the workplace?", explored the nuances of using in-work assessments to gauge training effectiveness and assess Trainees' performance. Dr Slattery's presentation titled "Mind the Gaps: Using end-of-year assessments to ensure trainee progression throughout the training continuum" highlighted some gaps in assessments and provided strategies to evaluate trainee progression more effectively. The session wrapped up with a panel discussion led by Prof Edward McKone, featuring Prof Rikki Fuller, Dr Natasha Slattery, Prof Karen Ryan and Dr Karen Dennehy.

The Institute of Medicine Winter Symposium was a successful event that provided valuable insights and information to medical professionals and educators, contributing to the advancement of clinician education.
