ICET – Trainer Introduction and Expression of Interest

The Irish Clinician Educator Training (ICET) programme is an innovative, advanced, educational pathway in the field of Postgraduate Clinical Education.

It is a 2-year National Programme developed to provide training in Postgraduate Clinical Education and it is open to Specialist Registrars who can undertake it as Out of Clinical Programme Experience (OCPE) in alignment with RCPI regulation for OCPE.

The aim of the programme is to support the training and professional development of the future leaders in Postgraduate Clinical Education in Ireland. You can read more about the ICET programme here (PDF, 258.5 KB).

This pilot programme is currently open to Trainees in the Institute of Medicine, with the intent to open it to other RCPI institutes and faculties for future iterations from the 2026/2027 training year onward.

As we look toward the expansion of this new programme, we would like to invite Trainers from all RCPI institutes and faculties to express their interest in getting involved with ICET for the 2025/2026 training year and beyond as we look to identify potential ICET posts and eligible Trainees in all HST specialties.

If you would like to register your interest in becoming an ICET Supervisor, please complete the short survey here no later than 4 October 2024:

Applications for ICET posts are made prospectively by Trainers and Trainees. Trainers must identify an available 2-year funded post in a clinical site offering protected time for the ICET programme and must have medical education expertise OR identify a suitable research advisor for the post. ICET post proposals must be approved well in advance, and Trainee applications for an ICET post commencing in July of a given year must be received no later than the end of the preceding November.

Please note due to short timelines for application and approval, Trainers with proposals for ICET posts for the 2025/2026 training year must also identify eligible Trainees for their posts at the time of proposal submission.

An information webinar will be delivered during the week of 7-11 October 2024 for all Trainers who register their interest in the survey linked above. Further details to be confirmed in due course.
