Faculty of Pathology Annual Symposium 2023

The programme featured a fascinating line-up of lectures which incorporated a variety of fascinating topics, including:

• Dr. Niamh Bermingham, Consultant Neuropathologist- “Brief Introduction to Faculty of Pathology’s newly accredited Neuropathology”
• Dr Rachel Howley, Senior Biochemist (CJD Surveillance Unit) Department of Neuropathology- “Real-Time Quaking-Induced Conversion (RTQuIC) in the Diagnosis of Prion Disease”
• Ms Harriet Wheelock, Keeper of Collections, RCPI- “Dear Flopsie, Chipsie and O.M.’: the life and letters of Dr E S Horgan”
• Dr Daniel Du Plessis, Consultant Neuropathologist- “A challenge to the role and reliability of immunohistochemistry in forensic neuropathology practice – The Lundy murders”
• Dr Susan Prendeville, Urologic Pathologist at University Health Network and Assistant Professor at University of Toronto, Canada- “Social Media in Pathology Education”

Key-Note Lecture:

The Key-Note Lecture was delivered on 9 February by Professor Michael Osborn, President of the Royal College of Pathologists UK. Professor Osborn’s lecture was titled “The Future of Pathology & Pathology Training.”

Professor Osborn was also awarded an honorary fellowship of the Faculty at an evening ceremony at No. 6 Kildare Street.

Annual General Meeting:

The Faculty of Pathology’s Annual General Meeting was held on the morning of Friday 10 February. It was followed by important updates on clinical programmes, NDTP, QI programme and MedLis.

Later, trainee pathologists and undergraduates were given the opportunity to share their research in the poster and rapid-fire oral presentation sessions, a popular segment of the event in previous years.

FRCPath Irish Exam Centres for Histopathology and Haematology Announced

An agreement to formalise the arrangement for the delivery of FRCPath Part 2 examinations in Ireland was signed on 9 February by the Faculty of Pathology at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) and the Royal College of Pathologists.

Announced during the Faculty of Pathology Annual Symposium, the agreement will see examination centres established by RCPI in Ireland for the delivery of FRCPath Part 2 examinations in histopathology and haematology, increasing the number of candidates who can sit the exams and making the examinations more accessible for Irish candidates.
