Faculty of Paediatrics Autumn Conference 2023

The Faculty of Paediatrics Autumn Conference took place at No. 6 Kildare Street on 6 October 2023. In addition to the in-person audience, the conference was also accessible to virtual attendees. The theme for this year's conference was Paediatric Practice, Education, and Emerging Trends. 

The conference featured an impressive line-up of expert speakers and a panel discussion, with talks from: 

  • Ms Harriet Wheelock – Kathleen Lynn Diaries 
  • Ms Tracey Wall – Update: New Children’s Hospital 
  • Dr Ifeanyichukwu O Okike – The value and role of British Paediatric Surveillance Unit (BPSU) studies in surveillance of rare diseases in childhood - why Irish participation matters 
  • Dr Ciara Martin and Prof Michael O’Grady – Clinical Programme Updates 
  • Dr Madeline Murphy – Updated guideline on the use of parenteral nutrition in neonatal and paediatric units 
  • Dr Fiona Browne – What’s New in Paediatric Dermatology 
  • Dr Daragh Finn – Update in paediatric cardiology- Elegy to the ECG? 
  • Dr Lorraine Stallard – Current and Future concepts in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases 
  • Dr Sarah Geoghegan – Developments in the prevention of respiratory syncytial virus in infants 
  • Prof Alfred Nicholson and Prof Kevin Dunne – Building Blocks in Paediatrics 
  • Dr Dani Hall – When 'Pretend' Saves Lives: A Simulation Story 
  • Prof Paul O’Connor – What Human Factors Really Is 
  • Dr Austin O’Corroll – Medicine at the Movies 

Keynote Lectures: 

In session three, Ralph Counahan lecture – Thriving in the midst of change: a 21st century approach to medical career planning, was delivered by Dr Camilla Kingdon, President of the Royal College of Paediatrics & Child Health (RCPCH). Another keynote lecture, titled Wisdom in Immunology, was delivered by Prof Andrew Cant, Honorary Clinical Professor in Paediatric Immunology. 

Dr Kingdon and Prof Cant were also awarded an honorary fellowship of the Faculty of Paediatrics, which is the highest award the College can bestow, at an evening ceremony at No. 6 Kildare Street.

There were a number of awards presented at the event. Congratulations to the winners:

  • Special recognition award: Dr Sabine Maguire 
  • Sir Henry Marsh Award: Dr Bryony Treston 
  • Victoria Coffee Award: Dr Aisling Smith 
  • Conor Ward Essay: Dr Sally Cahill 
  • National Excellence in Teaching Award: Dr Terence Prendiville, Prof Naomi McCallion, Dr Louise Gibson, and Prof Michael O'Neill 

     

Annual General Meeting:  

The Faculty of Paediatrics’ Annual General Meeting was held on the morning of 6 October 2023. The Faculty is delighted to announce that Dr Judith Meehan took up the role of Dean of the Faculty of Paediatrics during the AGM.
