Faculty of Occupational Medicine Spring Conference 2024

The Faculty of Occupational Medicine hosted its Spring Conference on 19 April 2024 at No. 6 Kildare Street, with participants joining both in person and online. 

The conference highlighted critical issues within occupational medicine, focusing on cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, respiratory conditions, infections, vaccinations, and other topics in the field. 

The programme included: 

  • “Immediate and Long-term Impact of a Breast Cancer Diagnosis” - Prof Carmel Malone, Consultant Breast and General Surgeon, University Hospital Galway 

  • “Cancer Treatment and Occupational Medicine – Starting a Conversation” - Dr Joseph Martin, MB, MSc, FRCPI, FFRRCSI Consultant Radiation Oncologist 

  • “IBD in the Workplace” - Ms Anne Marie Burke and Ms Helen Muldowney, Candidate Advanced Nurse Practitioners in Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Tallaght University Hospital 

  • “Tuberculosis, Still a Global Threat” - Dr Brian McCullagh, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital  

  • “Silicosis - a Clinical Perspective” - Prof Rodney Ehrlich, Emeritus Professor, Division of Occupational Medicine, School of Public Health, University of Cape Town, South Africa 

  • “Occupational Asthma” - Prof Conor Burke, Consultant Respiratory Physician 

  • “2023 Updates to Chapter 4 of NIAC Immunisation Guidelines for Ireland” - Dr Sarah Geoghegan, Clinical Lead of the National Immunisation Advisory Committee & Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin and Temple Street 

  • “Measles” - Dr Lucy Josephine Jessop, Consultant in Public Health Medicine and National Immunisation Lead, HSE National Immunisation Office 

  • “To Test or Not to Test: The Role of Post-Vaccination Serology in Assessing Responses to the HBV & MMR Vaccines” - Dr Cillian De Gascun, Consultant Virologist 

The conference also featured panel discussions and Q&A sessions, allowing for interactive dialogue between speakers and attendees on these vital topics.
