Dr Janet Carton appointed Head of Education at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland

The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland is delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Janet Carton to the role of Head of Education, overseeing education development, design and delivery, defining education strategy, and providing strategic direction for education partnerships and research to ensure consistent delivery of world-leading postgraduate medical curricula for our physicians.

Dr Carton joins RCPI from University College Dublin, where she has held various senior roles. Most recently, Janet was Head of Graduate Studies and Research Strategy, responsible for strategic development, associated policy enhancement, implementation, and review, and provided leadership on strategic, international collaborative initiatives and partnerships. She was a senior advisor to the Vice-President of UCD, as well as senior colleagues in the Irish and European higher education sector, driving a number of national initiatives with the IUA, on professional development for academics.  Janet designed and implemented UCD’s Research Supervisor Support and Development Framework (RSSDf), an innovative and bespoke framework for support, professional development, and recognition of research supervisors.

Janet simultaneously holds the role of Vice President of ORPHEUS - Quality in Doctoral Education in Biomedicine and Health, where she oversees doctoral training and quality assurance activities and is a trustee and executive committee member of the UKCGE. She is an accomplished academic developer, external reviewer, and advisor and has acted as a PhD examiner in her area of expertise.

She holds a first-class Honours Degree in Science (BSc. Hons, Zoology) from University College Dublin, and a PhD in Immunology (Heterogeneity of Human Intestinal T Lymphocytes) undertaken at St. Vincent’s University Hospital under Professor Cliona O’Farrelly.
