Anthony O’Regan appointed Medical Director of NDTP

Professor Anthony O’Regan, Foundational Dean of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has been appointed as Medical Director of NDTP (National Doctors Training and Planning), at the Health Service Executive, replacing Dr Brian Kinirons.

Welcoming Professor O’Regan’s appointment, Dr Diarmuid O’Shea, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland said:

“Our sincere congratulations to Professor Anthony O’Regan who brings a wealth of experience and unwavering commitment to advancing the training and education for our doctors and to improving patient care and outcomes.”

Professor Anthony O’Regan is a Consultant Respiratory Physician, Director of Postgraduate Clinical Education, Saolta University Healthcare Group, and Chair of the National Taskforce on the NCHD Workforce.

As Dean of the Institute of Medicine for the past five years, Professor O’Regan has demonstrated extensive understanding of postgraduate medical training and education and has demonstrated agility to respond to the changing landscape of medical education, healthcare delivery and population needs.

“Under his leadership, Trainee numbers have grown by 10% for BST and 40% for HST, and the Institute has undertaken an in-depth review of General Internal Medicine, resulting in twenty-six recommendations to inform the future of our healthcare system.

“In its infancy as we all faced the immense challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Professor O’Regan identified a key role for the Institute in providing timely and informed information from global experts, bringing a series of weekly COVID-19 webinars to an audience of over 20,000 people. During this time examinations and educational opportunities moved to online delivery reducing the potential disruption to our doctors’ career progression.”

Throughout his career Professor O’Regan has contributed to health sector dialogue and reform.

Professor O’Regan led the delivery of the report and recommendations of the Taskforce on the NCHD workforce launched in February 2024, capturing the critical working environment, support and resources required now to meet the health needs of our population.

“Professor O’Regan is incredibly well placed to take on the new challenge of Medical Director where he will oversee the implementation of the National Taskforce on the NCHD workforce recommendations and the NDTP Clinical Educator and training pilot.

“Our thanks to Dr Brian Kinirons who was collaborative, engaged and progressive as NDP Medical Director and I wish him well in his next steps.

“We wish Professor O’Regan all the very best in his new challenge and look forward to working with you to continue to improve the educational and training experience for all doctors.”

Professor O’Regan will formally present Professor Edward McKone, incoming Dean of the Institute of Medicine with the Dean’s Medal on Friday 21 June 2024. Professor McKone, who is the outgoing Director of Training and Education at IOM, has been instrumental in the Institute’s success and we wish him well in his new role.
