45 doctors awarded at RCPI Institute of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists’s Admission Ceremony

45 doctors were awarded at a special ceremony held in No. 6 Kildare Street on 7 March, during RCPI Institute of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists’s Spring Conference.

The ceremony took place the same day that the Chain of Office was handed from former institute Chair Prof Sam Coulter-Smith to the new Chair, Dr Suzanne O'Sullivan

“Sam, you should be very proud of your tenure,” said RCPI President Dr Diarmuid O’Shea. “It’s a pleasure to welcome you Suzanne, as the twentieth Chair of the institute. I wish you the best.”

At the institute’s annual Admission Ceremony, doctors are awarded Honorary Fellowship of RCPI, Fellowship of RCPI (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) , Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training, Associate Membership of RCPI Institute of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, and institute medals.

The college welcomed two esteemed Honorary Fellows – the highest award conferred by RCPI, and reserved for world leaders in medical science and those who have made an exceptional contribution to medicine or healthcare. Each college faculty and institute may admit two Honorary Fellows per year.

Prof John Kingdom is an obstetrician at Mount Sinai Hospital Toronto, and subspecialist in maternal-fetal medicine. Nearly 30 years ago, he founded Mount Sinai’s placenta clinic – one of the first of such services in the world. Prof Kingdom has a clinical and research focus on placenta-mediated pregnancy complications, including the assessment and surgical management of patients at risk of placenta accreta spectrum disorder.

He is the past Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Toronto (2013-2023), and a graduate of medicine at Trinity College Dublin.

Dr Shahad Mahmoud is an obstetrician-gynaecologist at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City hospital Abu Dhabi, and lead physician at the hospital’s OBGYN outpatient department. She specialises in the management of high-risk pregnancies and is adept at minimally invasive surgeries.

Dr Mahmoud played a crucial role in the introduction of Membership of RCPI Obstetrics & Gynaecology examinations to the UAE.

Twenty-seven doctors were recipients of Fellowship of RCPI (Obstetrics & Gynaecology). This is a special recognition of an individual’s contribution to their specialty, as part of a community of physicians operating at the forefront of medicine.
