International Basic Specialist Training Programme in Histopathology

The International Residency Programme is a comprehensive, two-year clinical training program in histopathology, offering in-depth experience in surgical pathology, cytopathology, and autopsy practice. The training provided is identical for both national and international trainees, ensuring a consistent and high-quality experience across all participants.

Training is conducted at designated hospital sites in Ireland and led by RCPI-certified trainers, with additional support through a structured national teaching program. This residency follows the curriculum of the RCPI and encourages trainees to actively participate in multidisciplinary clinical team meetings, engage in research and audit projects, and attend both national and international pathology conferences.

Beyond the technical aspects of histopathology, the program emphasises essential professional skills and ethical practice. Trainees develop these competencies through mentorship by experienced consultants, fully integrated into the curriculum and enhanced by RCPI’s education programs. The teaching is structured through slide sessions, journal clubs and formal lectures.

To complete the International Residency Program, trainees must fulfil all curriculum requirements, demonstrate satisfactory progress as evaluated by local and national trainers through workplace-based assessments, and pass the FRCPath Part 1 examination.
